Institute of Water & Energy was founded in 1967 to coordinate research efforts on water and energy and optimization alternatives compatible with technical and socioeconomic realities of the country. As such, various pilot and full scale projects have been undertaken in the areas of water desalination plants, solar water heaters since then.
Research and Development activities on low-cost wastewater treatment systems for private and governmental clients has recently been initiated at the Center. The idea has been to develop systems capable of producing environmentally acceptable effluents, require minimal energy expenditure , and are relatively easy to operate and maintain with local resources. As such, several successful projects has been initiated with primary focus on anaerobic wastewater treatment system for industrial effluents
Providing technical know-how to industries and municipalities on different ways to manage air quality is another area which the Center has become involved in. Research has been conducted to gain insight on the current status of urban pollution as compared to internationally accepted norms. Source apportionment of urban air pollutants has enabled the municipal authorities to optimize resource allocation and devise management strategies.
The Center is planning to expand its activities to hazardous waste management. With rapid industrialization of the country, this problem will become increasingly important in the newer future. As such, appropriate management schemes have to be developed in time to aid the decision makers in sound management of limited environmental resources.
