Biographical Sketch


Dr. Javad Akbari is an Associate Professor of Manufacturing at Sharif University of Technology. Dr. Akbari conducted research mainly on material removal using different machining processes. In recent years, he is working also on different additive manufacturing methods.

Dr. Akbari received his Bachelor's degree from the Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran), Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1985, his Master from the Utsunomiya University (Utsunomiya, Japan) in 1990 and his PhD from Chiba University (Chiba, Japan) in 1993. During 1993-95 he joined Seiko Instruments Inc. as a CNC machine tool designer. He received a Japanese government scholarship for 6 years and a postdoctoral fellowship (AIEJ) from Japan. Also receiving a German scholarship (DAAD), he was able to collaborate with the KSF in Furtwangen University in Germany for some time.


Since 1995, he has been employed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Sharif University of Technology. During these years he went to sabbatical leave twice. He served as an associate professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2000-2003 and was a professor at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 2012 to 2014 Dr. Akbari is a member of the editorial board of Amirkabir Journal of Mechanical Engineering. He has the experience of chairing the Iranian Society of Manufacturing Engineering.

Due to 11 years of living and working in scientific and industrial circles in Japan, Dr. Akbari is fluent in Japanese. In addition to his university background, he worked for two years at Seiko with Japanese engineering teams. He spent two years researching at the Chiba Prefectural Industrial Technology Research Institute and teaching for three years at Japan's best engineering university, Tokyo Tech. During this time, he had the opportunity to become acquainted with micro- and nano-scale manufacturing processes in the Precision and Intelligence Laboratory of the Tokyo Tech.
